bjp mla from st andre constituency Vishnu surya wagh for north while state congress youth president velanka alemao also figures in the list of four probable’s for south goa seat as candidates for parliamentary elections in congress list for goa

0

11/02/2014 … With few days left for the announcement to be made of the two probable’s for the upcoming lok Sabha elections the state congress party wasting no time seems to have zeroed in on the name of the present bjp mla from st andre constituency Vishnu surya wagh for its north goa parliament seat while state congress youth president velanka alemao also figures in the list of four probable’s for south goa seat

Though the state congress party had forwarded four names to the central committee of the state congress party which includes, girish chodankar, ramakhant khalap, jitendra deshprabhu and Vishnu surya wagh, mr wagh is been considered to be the front runner above the three and the aicc central committee could announce his name anytime once the end of the concluding parliament session and code of conduct is in force

The idea of naming mr wagh as one of the probable candidate for the north goa member of parliament seat for the congress party has been mooted by some of the top senior congress leaders with an idea of mr wagh being from the bahujan community who could give a strong fight to the bjp candidate Shripad naik who is also from the same bahujan community

What is more surprising is that the nationalist congress party had already shown interest in giving its north goa parliamentary seat to the st andre bjp mla vishun surya wagh though it was not confirmed but seeing the caste factor the congress leaders seems to have believed that mr wagh was the right candidate in north goa if the bjp candidate had to be defeated in the upcoming parliamentary elections

For the south goa parliamentary seat the state congress party seems to have sent four names to the aicc central committee which include present south goa mp Francisco sardinha along with the name of former chief minister luizinho faleiro and the of the two alemao’s Churchill and velanka …

Though Churchill name figures in the list sources said that if there is a by-election held for the benaulim assembly seat then Churchill would give way to his daughter as one of the probable for the south goa parliamentary seat along with luizinho and sardinha ….

When goanreporter asked the state congress president john Fernandes as weather mr wagh name was listed in the four probable’s that were sent to the aicc central committee mr Fernandes said “ party would finalize its candidate name once the election code of conduct comes in to force but we know who are our likely candidates for the two seats in goa and naturally we have whispered in to their ears about it and campaign for the same has already started as we certainly know who are our candidates”

On asked if like other congress leaders he was also interested to go alone without the support of his coalition partners for the upcoming parliamentary elections Mr Fernandes said “ here in goa the sentiments of congressmen are to go alone as congress has a mass base committee and cader’s in the state in place and therefore everyone in the congress feels that if ticket is given to congress then we can produce results and win both the seats in the state”

“I also feel that with the candidate we have in mind it would be a cake walk for the congress party to win the parliamentary seat in north goa specially and since south goa is our seat we have no problem to regain that seat once again with same candidate or the other candidate whichever is decided by the high command mr Fernandes said ”

5/02/2014 … (courtesy herald) …. PANJIM: Infosys top boss N R Narayana Murthy simultaneously agreed that education and “finishing school” were necessary for budding politicians, while delivering the inaugural lecture on “Creating a positive India” at the  D D Kosambi Festival of Ideas, on Tuesday.

He said that he was willing to provide the infrastructure at their premises but he wanted political parties to provide the teachers and other basics to provide a school for politicians so that they could learn the basics of governance, economics, international negotiation and international law.

“It would be a good idea if all the parties come together and create a finishing school for politicians… where they will learn economics, international negotiations, international law…,’ he told the audience adding, “We will provide free facilities to them if they provide teachers at no cost.”

The festival was inaugurated by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’ Souza, art and culture minister Dayanand Mandrekar, MLA and  Kala Academy chairman Vishnu Wagh, besides other officials.

Murthy was responding to a question as to why the political class did not have some training in their field given that those in other professions like teaching had to have certain training before they were allowed to teach. He also pushed for better facilities for politicians.

Murthy said “Unless we provide our politicians with salaries like senior executives in the corporate world, we will be unwittingly pushing them to do things…”

He also spoke on the need for transparency, pointing out that none needed this more than the poor.

Stating that technology is necessary to improve basic services through coordination, Murthy argued that technology should be used to automate workflow and democratise information.

The Infosys boss said that the internet empowers people by conquering distance and time and brings in transparency. “Democracy needs these powerful tools to enhance interaction between the government and its people,” he said, adding that another important use of the internet is e-governance.

He expressed his optimism that that political leaders “here and elsewhere” will work with alacrity to improve the standards of public … system so that we can indeed effect a fast growing and equitable economy and make life better for the poorest of the poor.

Replying to questions, Murthy said that participation and the importance of involving people in decision-making was a way of getting their cooperation and changing the ‘culture.

He also told a student that positive thinking was necessary but that had to be supplemented by hard work. “Being positive is very important,” he argued.  (courtesy herald)

India Take Home Basketball Gold And Bronze

0

28/01/2014 … team Goa-India won the coveted Basketball gold medal beating Angola in a thrilling match, in what was otherwise an action-packed day at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerji indoor stadium at Taleigao, which also saw two other medal matches being played out.

The first game of the day was the tie between Mozambique and Cape Verde. The low scoring match went in favour of Mozambique, with the balance tilting in their favour in the final quarter. The final score: 56-37.

Cesar Mujui, Head Coach of Mozambique, contently said, “We knew that the final quarter would be the decider, and went for the Bronze with that mentality. Once we established a clear cut 10 point lead, we knew we were headed in the right direction.”

The following match was the medal-decider between Women’s Gold contenders Angola and Mozambique. The last leg in what started out as a round robin tournament saw both teams needing a victory in order to get their hands on the coveted medal. Playing their signature style of full-court press offensive play, Mozambique attacked their opponents right from the tip-off, and defended just as relentlessly.

By halftime, there seemed to be nearly no doubt as to who would be heading home in first place with the score leaning in Mozambique’s favour by that point at 21-40. The final score, in Mozambique’s favour was set at 73-49.

Ecstatic with his side’s performance, Head Coach of Mozambique, Nazir Sale, said, “This is what we came here with our sights set on. It was hard work, that we needed to accomplish, and I feel that we did just that. Angola are a difficult side to play, but we overcame them with our pace and percentage of steals.”

Following their first encounter, the game between Angola and Goa-India was always going to be hard fought. Of this there was no doubt.

However, a nail biter of such large proportions is always one worth witnessing, irrespective of how many times the sides play each other.

By the end of the game, tempers may have been frayed, and animosity may have been abundant, but there could only be one winner, and that was Goa-India, with the score set at 77-70.

Stoked by the result, Goa-India Head Coach, Scott Flemming said, “Tonight was a great win that showed immense character. I think it all comes down to a unified performance. The team needed to push for the lead. That they did and it just tipped in our favour. Superb result in all.”
