7 Mexican films to be screened in various categories at IFFI 2022

The Karlos Eichelmann Kaisar-directed Mexican film Red Shoes will be competing for the Golden Peacock award at IFFI

The 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will screen at least seven Mexican films in a variety of categories as part of its celebration of international cinema, the organisers have said in a statement.

Mexico is known for celebrated filmmakers such as Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Reygadas, who have created world-class films and won countless international accolades.

At IFFI, the Mexican film Red Shoes will be competing with 14 other films in the International Competition segment, the winner of which is awarded the coveted Golden Peacock.

Directed by Karlos Eichelmann Kaisar, Red Shoes is a film about a farmer receiving the news of his daughter’s death and his struggles to bring her body home. The film was in contention for the Audience Award at Venice International Film Festival.

Another Mexican film, Island of Lost Girls, which is helmed by Ann-Marie Schmidt and Brian Schmidt, is also competing for the title of Best Debut Feature Director. The film tells a gripping tale of three sisters who get stranded in a marine cave where they have to battle for survival. Both the Fantasia Festival and the Moscow International Film Festival screened this movie.

The remaining five films of Mexican origin marking their presence at IFFI 53 are Blanquita, Sol’s Journey, Eami, Pinocchio and Huesera.

Conducted every year by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the IFFI aims to celebrate films, the stories they tell and the people behind them. The 53rd edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from November 20 to 28 in Panaji, Goa.

Tiatr Academy of Goa, (TAG) celebrates the Birth Anniversary of late Regina Fernandes, the First Lady of the tiatr stage every year on November 16. On this occasion, TAG also presents Young Achievers Award to two young tiatr personalities who have given their valuable contribution to tiatr.

This year the awards are being conferred on Aveena Pereira and  Senon Silvestre De Souza. The awards will be presented at a function November 16, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. at the Multipurpose Hall, Directorate of Art & Culture, Patto, Panjim. This will be followed by staging of  a Konkani Musical Show which will be presented by Socorro de St. Cruz.

Senior tiatrist, Smt. Sharon Mazarello will be the Chief Guest and Deputy Director, Directorate of Art and Culture, Patto, Panaji, Shri. Ashok Parab will be the Guest of Honour. Prizes of Kantaram competition organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa  will also be presented on this occasion. All Tiatr lovers are invited to attend the function in large numbers.

Recalling the speech of Swami Vivekananda stating that one day India will become Vishwa Guru, Governor of Goa Shri P.S Sreedharan Pillai said that it’s proud to say that we are proceeding towards Making our Bharat Vishwa Guru for the peace and prosperity of the people across the world. During the war between Ukraine and Russia the India was the only Country in world who evacuated its Citizens from both the countries.
He was speaking during interaction programe with Sarpanchas and Panch Members of Panchayats of Advalpal, Mulgaon, Sal, Mencurem-Dumacem, Latambarcem and Bicholim as a part of Sampurna Goa Yatra today at Bicholim.
Speaking further he said that India is a developing country. During the recent pandemic, India was tge only country in the world who maintained its GDP and increased its Development and other activities.
 Dr. Chandrakant Shetye, MLA in his address said that for the first time in Goa the Governor has Started Vamanavriksha Kala Garder at Raj Bhavan apart from undertaking various projects and initiatives like Goushala, providing financial assistance to shelter homes, cancer patients, dialysis patients etc. He also highlighted the various historical places in Bicholim Constituency.
Governor Shri P.S Sreedharan Pillai disbursed financial assistance to 19 dialysis patients and Cancer patients from Bicholim constituency on the occasion.
Governor during his day long tour at Bicholim visited Shree Shantadurga Devasthan, Our Lady of Grace Church and Namazgah Mosque Bicholim and invoked blessings.
Present on the occasion were First Lady Smt. Rita Pillai , Shri. Premendra Shet Mayem MLA, Secretary to Governor, Shri Mihir Vardhan IAS Rtd. and other government officers.

A total of 15 films will compete for the coveted Golden Peacock at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa.

A total of 15 films will compete for the coveted Golden Peacock at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The IFFI will be held from the 20th to the 28th of this month. From the very first Golden Peacock awarded in the 3rd edition of IFFI, the prize has been amongst the most sought-after film awards in Asia.

 

The jury tasked with the impossible job of picking a winner this year comprises of Israeli writer and film director Nadav Lapid, American producer Jinko Gotoh, French film editor Pascale Chavance, French documentary film-maker, film critic and journalist Javier Angulo Barturen and India’s very own film director Sudipto Sen.

IFFI 2022 to remember Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri, Saawan Kumar Tak and others in remembrance

In remembrance of some iconic gems of Indian cinema, the 53rd edition of IFFI will pay a homage to film icons who passed away recently.

In appreciation of their exemplary contribution to cinema, IFFI will pay a tribute to personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri, KK, Sawan Kumar Tak and more, with screenings of one of their most memorable films.

Some of the prominent films that will be screened at the festival are Disco Dancer for Bappi Lahiri, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan starrer Abhimaan for Lata Mangeshkar, Bhool Bhulaiyaa for singer KK. Apart from this, classics like Saraswatichandra (for Ramesh Deo), Anhonee (for Raveena Tandon’s father Ravi Tandon) and Souten (for Saawan Kumar Tak) will also be part of the homage section. Other prominent titles like, Yash Chopra’s Lamhe, Mani Ratnam‘s Thiruda Thiruda and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda will also find an audience in this section.

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is held annually in Goa and it showcases movies and personalities from both Indian as well as foreign countries. This year the Austrian movie Alma and Oskar, directed by Dieter Berner will open the festival proceedings.

Mexico is a country known for its vibrant culture and storied history. Today, another addition to the country’s ever growing cultural heritage is its cinema. Legends such as Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Reygadas, have produced world class films and won international critical acclaim. The 53rd IFFI also celebrates Mexico and its cinema with the screening of 7 Mexican films in various categories. 

The 2022 Mexican Film Red Shoes will be competing with 14 other films in the International Competition segment, winner of which is awarded the coveted Golden Peacock. Red Shoes directed by Karlos Eichelmann Kaisar is a film about a farmer who lives an isolated life, receiving the news of his daughter’s death. The film progresses as the farmer tries to navigate through an unfamiliar and alien world to try and bring his daughter’s body home. Among the multiple award nominations the film has received, it was in contention for the Audience Award at Venice International Film Festival.

Also, in the running for the award for ‘Best Debut Feature Director’ is the Mexican film Island of Lost Girls directed by Ann-Marie Schmidt and Brian Schmidt. The film is a thrilling story of three sisters who find themselves trapped in a sea cave battling gigantic waves and supernatural creatures. The film was screened at the Moscow International Film Festival as well as the Fantasia Festival.

She rises from the ashes, to fearlessly proclaim the exclusive right she has on her body and the decisions involving it. Yes, you would not want to miss the chance to be inspired, by the elevating story of girls belonging to a tribal community in Kerala.

The fascinating story is brought to us by ‘Dhabari Quruvi‘, the first film in the history of Indian cinema to star only people from indigenous communities. Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Priyanandan, the film also has the distinction of having been shot completely in the tribal language of Irula.

The film is being presented at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India, which is set to open in Goa on 20th November, 2022. And yes, the 104-minute-long feature film is all set to have its world premiere in the Indian Panorama section of IFFI.

Portrayal of indigenous people in Indian cinema has often been criticised for its failure to look beyond stereotypes. Amidst a cinematic tradition and culture which may not have done justice to the true identity and culture of tribal peoples, Dhabari Quruvi is expected to stand out as a candle spreading founts of newfound hope and inspiration. Set against the background of tribal rituals and culture, the film invites viewers to join the tempestuous journey of a tribal girl as she battles convention and seeks to free herself from the chains with which society had tied her lot.

In Irula language, Dhabari Quruvi means ‘a sparrow with an unknown father’. The mythological bird, which is part of the tribal folklore, captures the untold tales of the unseen people who suffer quietly, who yearn to break the shackles of injustice, whose agonies and struggles the film seeks to bring to light.

So, who are the actors who bestow the film with the honour of having a unique star cast? They are around sixty people, belonging to Irula, Muduka, Kurumba and Vaduka tribal communities of Attappadi, a scheduled tribe hamlet of the southern Indian state of Kerala. Quite a few of them had not ever seen a film in their entire life.

The actors were selected from an acting workshop conducted at Attappadi in which around 150 people participated. Meenakshi, Shyamini, Anuprasobhini and Muruki play main roles in the film. The cast also includes Nanjiyamma, the tribal woman from Attappady who got the 68th National Film Award for Best Female Singer last year.

Dhabari Quruvi has bagged URF world record for being the only feature film starring only tribals. The film has also been selected to the International Film Festival of Kerala.

‘India Lockdown’ will have its world premiere at the upcoming International Film Festival of India (IFFI). The 53rd edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from November 20 to 28 in Panaji, Goa.

Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, ‘India Lockdown’ is inspired by true events. It will depict four parallel stories and the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic on the people of India.

The movie features Prateik Babbar, Sai Tamhankar, Shweta Basu Prasad, Prakash Belawadi and Aahana Kumra.

Country Focus – France for this Year IFFI-2022

To celebrate cinematic excellence and contributions to film art by the country of focus, a special presentation is featured by the International Film Festival of India. In the 53rd edition of IFFI, the Country of Focus selected is France.

Film history owes its historical and aesthetic legacies to the always inventive trailblazing cinema of France. To this day, the generation of French directors including Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, and Claude Chabrol, is regarded as the most artistically fertile cinematic revolution in the history of films.

Organized in collaboration with the Embassy of France and Institut Français India, the Country Focus segment will commence on November 21st, 2022, at INOX Panjim, IFFI – Goa.

Other People’s Children

Synopsis: Virginie Efira stars as a teacher whose new relationship with a single father becomes complicated when she begins to connect with his young daughter.

‘Other People’s Children’ is the Opening Film of the Country Focus section. It is a tragicomedy about a middle-aged woman who starts a new relationship and creates a close bond with her partner’s young daughter. It premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival and competed for the Golden Lion award.

The Crossing (2021)

Synopsis: An animated feature film following the dramatic journey of two siblings, Kyona and her brother Adriel, who are running away, because they are being pursued by an unspecified Eastern European country.

‘The Crossing’ features surreal and fairytale-like imagery that evokes brush drawings and paintings and offers an emotional look at immigration that will move all ages. It was selected to be part of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2021.

Belle and Sebastian: The Nouvelle Generation
