0

Panaji, November 16, 2016 …. “The press are an important pillar of democracy,” said Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Laxmikant Parsekar while speaking at the National Press Day function organized by the Department of Information and Publicity, on the occasion of the Foundation Day of Press Council of India, at Panaji on Wednesday. The function was organized in collaboration with Goa Editor’s Guild, Goa Union of Journalists, Photo Journalist’s Association of Goa, Electronic Media Journalist’s Association, Sports Journalist’s Association of Goa and South Goa Journalist’s Association. Talking about his experience with the media, the Chief Minister said, “The press persons are the best people. Their suggestions are very useful. We have several welfare schemes for journalists, and our government will resolve pending matters of the press in Goa, amicably, soon.”

The keynote speaker for the day was the Chairperson and Editor in Chief The Print, Shri Shekhar Gupta, who spoke on the theme ‘Reporting from Conflict Area-A Challenge for Media’. Shri Gupta said, “India has a history of reporting conflict. There are mainly three types of such conflict reporting. One is conflict with one’s country against a foreign country. The second type of conflict is when there’s conflict with one’s own state and its people and the third conflict is when people are at conflict with their fellow citizens. Each kind of conflict poses its own challenges and dilemmas to journalists. But it is important to always stay with the truth. The problem with conflict reporting in India is when some end up glorifying what little conflict there is and don’t understand the grief of those who are going through this conflict. As journalists it is important to be sensitive, fair and correct when reporting from conflict zones. The closer you are to the truth, the better,” he said.

Shri Gupta added, “Journalists have to be like good doctors in the sense that just as a good doctor will diagnose and treat a patient only for its illness, and not on other factors such as religion, region etc, so also journalists must look at facts clinically”. Shri Gupta concluded, “When reporting on conflicts nothing serves the national interest more than the absolute truth.”

Shri Daulat A. Hawaldar, IAS, Secretary, information and Publicity, who was the guest of honour said, “Words have tremendous power to influence minds.” Shri Hawaldar added further, “Before the written word came, there was oral tradition of storytelling like folk tales. The dominant theme in folk tales was their reference to love and compassion. I expect the media to have larger human values. They should articulate and give vent to the collective minds of the people, that’s when people will keep reading their stories.”

Shri Jayant Tari, Director of Department of Information and Publicity, earlier in his welcome address said, “The Department has been making a lot of efforts to reach out to the public. We have come out with innovative ways to reach out to the public. We are also committed to the welfare and well being of journalists by implementing various schemes like the financial assistance to purchase cameras and laptops and the Patrakar Kritadnyata Nidhi scheme.”

Shri Modi spoke of how Goa recently won in so many parameters in the best small state category in an independent survey conducted by a reputed media house. “As Chief Minister of Gujarat, when Manohar Parrikar was the Chief Minister of Goa, I used to carefully study the schemes Manohar Parrikar implemented and he used to understand the issues of poor people. Today, Goa has schemes like the Griha Aadhar scheme, the Dayanand Social Security scheme for senior citizens, the Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojana, which no other state in the country has.

Speaking highly of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Shri Modi said, “Akbar had nine ratnas. I have many ratnas with me and one of the shinning one is Manohar Parrikar whom the people of Goa have given me. Ever since he took over the Defence Ministry, he has sorted so many issues, that no one can point a finger against the Ministry.”

Shri Modi further said, “The BJP government in Goa has brought political stability to the state. I congratulate Manohar Parrikar for bringing about a certain political culture to Goa. He had to face a lot for that, had to lose friends, but he took Goa to greater heights. Choosing a stable government is in the hands of the people, the Goans understood it that’s why I congratulate the people of Goa.”Shri Modi added, “I see Goa heading to a future that’s youth driven, digitally trained and most modern.”

The Prime Minister further spoke of the issue of the demonitization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, which he said was an important step to deal with corruption and black money. “I have only done what my country asked me to when they elected me. That is to fight black money. I didn’t keep my country in the dark. There were several measures that we took prior to this decision. One was to impose excise duty on jewellers which we did by giving them assurance that those who exploit them would be dealt with firmly. We had a scheme where those who had not declared their assets or paid their taxes were given the opportunity to do so. Through this and through raids, the country recovered crores of money. We also asked everyone to open their bank account through the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.” Shri Modi further said, “The world is progressing but corruption is spoiling India’s future and the future of our youth. This step of demonization is not the end of the fight against corruption and black money. There are more projects in my mind which will come to fight corruption and black money.”

Shri Modi thanked the people working in the banking sector for working hard in this situation. “I ask you all to give me time till December 30. I have faith in the honest citizens of this country.”

Beautiful Goa which is known for tourism is also being now recognised as an event destination.” Talking of the projects his government has done he said that these major projects will also lead to peripheral development, which will boost the economy and give employment to Goans.

India’s Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar, expressed his gratitude to Shri Narendra Modi, and said that after Shri Modi’s government came to power at the Centre, the most infrastructural development carried out among all states was in Goa. 0

November 13, 2016 …. The Governor of Goa Dr. (Smt.) Mridula Sinha has conveyed her love, greeting and best wishes to the children of Goa and elsewhere on the occasion of Children’s Day. In her message she said this day is marked specially to revive our memory of the relevance and importance of Children in our national life and our obligation to them.

The Governor has further said having been a teacher myself, and engaged in social work with particular focus on women and children’s welfare, I have had immense opportunities to interact with children at very close quarters, and their psychology continues to be a fascinating study for me to this day. I would like to emphasize that the formative years form the most crucial period in human life. Every child has the right to live a life of his or her choice, and it is our bounded duty to facilitate the same and to ensure their physical, mental, moral vital and social advancement. We should learn as to how to interact with children and nurse them at different stages.

Governor further said, our words, expressions, actions and dealings with them will ultimately determine and contribute to the shaping of their personality. The parents shoulder the basic responsibility of moulding the children’s minds. They should know the child’s psychology and act with due care and concern to meet their specific needs for their all round and balanced growth. There is no point in over burdening the children at tender age the Governor added.

In her message the Governor further said, the future of our nation lies on the shoulders of our children. We should have abounding love for children and abiding faith in their potential for the future. While it is a matter of satisfaction that very many efforts are being made by the Government and also by voluntary organizations and being institutions for the welfare of Children, there is still a lot more to be done to she added.

GTDC to organize special tour on the eve of Tripurari Purnima

0

panaji, november 12th, 2016 … Goa Tourism Development Corporation is organizing a special tour to Vithalpur, Sanquelim to celebrate and witness Tripurari Purnima, a unique boat festival organised annually in the State. This year the festival will be celebrated on Monday, 14 November 2016.Movie Fifty Shades Darker (2017)

This festival has an interesting story behind it and is celebrated to mark the end of the Diwali season.

According to mythology, Lord Krishna defeated and killed the demon Tripurasur on the day of Kartik Purnima. The people celebrated Krishna’s victory and the end of the demon’s tyranny by releasing lamps in the river. Since then it has been a tradition all over India to release small lamps in the river during the time of Diwali and especially Kartik Purnima.

An interesting element about the way this is celebrated in Goa is the distinctive local touch. The tradition takes the form of a very unusual competition – that of making miniature models boats and ships made out of thermocol and other materials. Besides the main boat competition, there are a host of cultural programmes including songs by well known artistes, performances of various Goan traditional folk dances along with a display of fireworks.

The special tour on the eve of Tripurari Purnima is open to all locals and tourists.

The tickets are priced at Rs. 100/- per person. Children above 6 years and below 12 years will be charged Rs.50/-. A 10% special discount on rooms will be offered to the guests at Panaji/Mapusa/ Miramar and Calangute Residency to those who will book the tour to Tripurari Purnima.
