Panaji, GOA, 19th NOVEMBER 2018: In accordance with its end motive of developing the art of cinema in the country, IFFI 2018 is hosting an In-Conversation session with some critically acclaimed and celebrated filmmakers from India and the United States of America. The session titled, ‘Round Table Business Conference’ is a producers’ pitch that aims to bring distinguished producers from India and United States to share their views on film production.

This list consists of filmmakers, artistes and professionals who have been instrumental behind the scenes of films that have earned both critical and commercial acclaim. The roster includes celebrated producers of films such as 300 and The Hangover, a development associate with Johnny Depp’s production company, a National Award winner who has co-produced Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a producer of films like Magadheera, and others who’ve years of experience launching and executing films across genres and scales.

The ‘Round Table Business Conference’ will be held on 27 November 2018 from 11 am to 1 pm at Macquinez 1.

The major points of discussion at the Round Table Business Conference will be:

– What do they look for in a script and how to select an ideal director for that script

– The challenges faced in production of a film as producers are risk-takers who catch an idea, run with it and convince others to follow the idea

– The way ahead for production scenarios in film industries in other countries

– The possibilities of collaborations with India in future

The panelists at the session are as follows:

John Hart

John Hart has been producing theatre works and movies for nearly 40 years and is best known for his work on Once (musical) (2012 winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical), The Band’s Visit (musical) (2018 winner of ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical), Boys Don’t Cry (film), You Can Count on Me and Revolutionary Road (film). His productions have garnered him five personal Tony Awards for Best Production.

William Fay

William Fay has produced global successes like 300 (2006), The Hangover (2009), and Independence Day (1996). He has been the President of Production, Legendary Pictures [June 2005] and President of Centropolis Entertainment [1998].

Bobby Deolone

Bobby Deolene is a Hollywood Entertainment Executive with over two decades of industry experience. Bobby is a development associate at Infinitum Nihil, Johnny Depp‘s production company in Los Angeles. He is also associated with CAA.

Christopher Tillman

Christopher Tillman is a SAG-AFTRA actor/producer living in the Los Angeles area. He has a BA in theatre from Vanguard University which he received in 2002. While at Vanguard he was named collegiate actor of the year by The Daily Pilot. In 2010 he created Benchwarmer Productions to produce the short film Misusing Irony which he also starred in. He went on to write and produce The Distance Between which won the jury prize for best short film at the Omaha Film Festival (2013).

Bianca Goodloe

Bianca Goodloe is an expert on entertainment law and film finance,  She is a member of the California Bar Association, the New York Bar Association and a Foreign Registered Advocate with the European Union.  As the Managing Partner of Goodloe Law, Bianca Goodloe founded the law practice in 2003. She is also an adjunct professor at New York University and University of California Los Angeles.

Rockline Venkatesh

Rockline Venkatesh is widely known for his works in Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi cinemas. He is the founder and owner of the production and distribution company, Rockline Entertainments which has produced over twenty five films as of 2012. In 2015 he co-produced Bajrangi Bhaijaan which earned the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at the 63rd National Film Awards.

Allu Arvind

Allu Arvind, who has produced many widely watched movies including Magadheera (2009). He produces films under his production banner Geetha Arts with his brother-in-law, actor Chiranjeevi.

Kalaipuli S. Thanu

Kalaipuli S. Thanu has produced films through his two production companies, V Creations and Kalaipuli Films International. A large number of his films have been commercially successful, three of which are among the top-ten highest grossing Tamil films of all time.

Panaji, Goa, 18th November 2018: It’s raining Oscar-nominated films at IFFI this year. Of the 87 films nominated by their respective countries in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 91st Academy Awards, as many as 16 films are going to be screened at IFFI 2018. That’s more than one-fifth of all the films vying for the top award. These films are spread across multiple categories at IFFI 2018.

 

Oscar nominated films in Festival Kaleidoscope

 The Festival Kaleidoscope section carries 20 critically acclaimed international festival favourites directed by some of the most well-known and feted filmmakers which includes the likes of Jafar Panahi, Gaspar Noe, Lars Von Trier, Zia Zhangke, Jean Luc Godard, Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Kim Ki Duk.

 8 out of the 20 films in this section have been nominated for the 91st Academy Awards. These films are: The Guilty (Denmark), Yomeddine (Egypt), Woman at War (Iceland), Dogman (Italy), Shoplifters (Japan), Cold War (Poland), The Wild Pear Tree (Turkey), and Ayka (Kazakhstan).

 Oscar-nominated films in World Panorama

 World Panorama section has 67 films which are specially curated for the festival. This year World Panorama section presents 3 films, which are Oscar submissions from respective countries. These films are: Birds of Passage (Colombia), Winter Flies (Czech), and The Heiresses (Paraguay).

 Oscar nominated films in International Competition

 The International Competition section has 15 films out of which 3 are Indian. Competition section itself represents films produced and co-produced by 22 countries. The only Oscar-nominated film to be competing against a total of 15 films in the section is Donbass (Ukraine) which was also the opening film in the Un Certain Regard category at Cannes this year.

 ICFT prize consisting of the UNESCO Gandhi Medal for Film

 IFFI 2018 has collaborated with the International Council for Film, Audiovisual Communication (ICFT) Paris, to present a special ICFT prize consisting of the UNESCO Gandhi Medal to a film, which reflects the ideals promoted by UNESCO. This year 10 films will be showcased for selection of a film to be presented with this coveted award, out of which 3 have been nominated at the 91st Academy Award. These films are Capernaum (Lebanon),

Border (Sweden), and The Interpreter (Slovakia).

 Oscar nominated Tunisan film a part of ‘Special Presentation: Tunisia’

 There are three Tunisian films being showcased at IFFI 2018 as part of a special presentation of films from Tunisia. The Oscar Nominated Tunisian film, Beauty and the Dogs is a part of this category.

 The Directorate of Film Festivals, while commenting on these Oscar-nominated films, said, “IFFI has always been about a healthy exchange of the cinema culture between countries. We are happy to have these 16 Oscar-nominated films at IFFI 2018, thereby giving the audiences a great opportunity to experience the magic of the best of world cinema on the big screen.”

 The 16 Oscar-nominated films at IFFI 2018 are as follows:

 Birds of Passage (Spanish)

 Birds of Passage is a 2018 crime film directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra. The film chronicles a Wayuu family’s rise and fall during the early days of illegal drug trading in Colombia. Spanning the late 60s and 70s, the film is divided into five chapters: Wild Grass, The Graves, Prosperity, The War and Limbo.

 It was selected to open the 50th edition of the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. It was selected as the Colombian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Starring: Carmina Martínez, Natalia Reyes, José Acosta

 Winter Flies (Czech)

 Winter Flies is a 2018 Czech road movie drama by Slovenian director Olmo Omerzu. The film follows two boys – Mára and Heduš. Heduš runs away from home. He joins Mára who tells him that he is running away from home. They drive through countryside in a Mára’s car. They meet hitchhiker Bára who joins them. Both boys dream about having sex with her but she locks herself in the car during night and boys have to sleep outside. Mára reveals to Heduš that he goes to his grandfather who is a retired military officer. Boys eventually get to Mára’s grandfather who suffers a heart attack and boys get him to hospital. Mára is later arrested by 2 police officers who interrogate him.

 The film premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on 1 July 2018. Olmo Omerzu has won a Best Director Award at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It was selected as the Czech entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards

 The Guilty (Danish)

 The Guilty is a 2018 Danish thriller film co-written and directed by Gustav Möller. The film narrates the story of an alarm dispatcher Asger Holm who answers an emergency call from a kidnapped woman. When the call is suddenly disconnected, the search for the woman and her kidnapper begins. With the phone as his only tool, Asger enters a race against time to save the endangered woman. But soon he realizes that he is dealing with a crime that is far bigger than he first thought.

 The Guilty was screened in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. It was selected as the Danish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

 Yomeddine (Arabic)

 Yomeddine is a 2018 Egyptian drama film directed by Abu Bakr Shawky based on friendship relations. A Coptic leper and his orphaned apprentice leave the confines of the leper colony for the first time and embark on a journey across Egypt to search for what is left of their families.

 The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, it won the François Chalais Prize. It was selected as the Egyptian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Starring: Rady Gamal, Ahmed Abdelhafiz

 Woman at War (Icelandic)

 Woman at War is a 2018 internationally co-produced comedy-drama thriller film written, produced and directed by Benedikt Erlingsson, and starring Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir. The film talks about Halla, a choir conductor, who wants to disrupt the operations of a Rio Tinto aluminium plant in the Icelandic highlands. She repeatedly damages pylons and wires to cut their power supply. One day, a long-forgotten application to adopt an orphan child from Ukraine is approved. At the same time, the government ramps up police and propaganda efforts in order to catch and discredit her. The film revolves around her attempts to reconcile her dangerous and illegal activism with the upcoming adoption.

 Following a premiere at 2018 Cannes Film Festival via the International Critics’ Week, it was released on 22 May 2018. It was selected as the Icelandic entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards

 Dogman (Italian)

 Dogman is a 2018 Italian drama film directed by Matteo Garrone. The film revolves around Marcello, a small and gentle dog groomer, who finds himself involved in a dangerous relationship of subjugation with Simone, a former violent boxer who terrorizes the entire neighbourhood. In an effort to reaffirm his dignity, Marcello will submit to an unexpected act of vengeance.

 It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Marcello Fonte won the award for Best Actor. It was selected as the Italian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

 Shoplifters (Japanese)

 Shoplifters is a 2018 Japanese drama film directed, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Starring Lily Franky and Sakura Ando, it is about a family who rely on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. Somewhere in Tokyo, Osamu Shibata and his wife Nobuyo live in poverty. While Osamu receives occasional employment and Nobuyo has a low-paying job, the family relies in large part on the grandmother’s pension. As he is shoplifting for groceries with his son, Shota, they discover Yuri, a homeless girl. Osamu takes her home, where the family observes evidence of abuse. Despite their strained finances, they informally adopt her.

 The film premiered on 13 May 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it went on to win the Palme d’Or. The film was released in Japan on 8 June 2018 and was a critical and commercial success.

 Ayka (Russian)

 Ayka is a 2018 Russian-Kazakhstani drama film directed by Sergey Dvortsevoy. In the center of the plot is an emigrant woman from Kyrgyzstan named Ayka. In search of earnings, she wanders the streets. Having no registration document, she is at risk of becoming the prey of corrupt police officers and cunning countrymen.

 The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Samal Yeslyamova won the award for Best Actress. It was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

 Capernaum (Arabic)

 Capernaum also known as Capharnaüm, is a 2018 Lebanese drama film written and directed by Nadine Labaki. Capernaun (“Chaos”) tells the story of Zain (Zain al Rafeea), a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life. The film follows Zain as he journeys from gutsy, streetwise child to hardened 12-year-old “adult” fleeing his negligent parents, surviving through his wits on the streets, taking care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil and her baby son Yonas, being jailed for a violent crime, and finally, seeking justice in a courtroom.

 It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize. The film received a 15-minute standing ovation following its premiere at Cannes on 17 May 2018. Lebanon has selected Capharnaum as its submission for consideration in the best foreign-language film category at the 91st Academy Awards.

 The Heiresses (Spanish)

 The Heiresses is a 2018 Paraguayan drama film directed by Marcelo Martinessi. Chela and Chiquita are both descended from wealthy families in Asunción and have been together for over 30 years. But recently, their financial situation has worsened and they begin selling off their inherited possessions. But when their debts lead to Chiquita being imprisoned on fraud charges, Chela is forced to face a new reality. Driving for the first time in years, she begins to provide a local taxi service to a group of elderly wealthy ladies. As Chela settles into her new life, she encounters

the much younger Angy, forging a fresh and invigorating new connection. Chela finally begins to break out of her shell and engage with the world, embarking on her own personal, intimate revolution.

 The film was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival, where Ana Brun won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. The film was also selected as the Paraguayan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, for the Best Iberoamerican Film at the 33rd Goya Awards,

and for the Best Iberoamerican Film at the 61st Ariel Awards.

 Cold War (Polish)

 Cold War is a 2018 Polish drama film directed by Paweł Pawlikowski. It is a passionate love story between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatefully mismatched and yet condemned to each other. Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.

 It competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Pawlikowski won the award for Best Director. It also received the Golden Lions Award at the 43rd Gdynia Film Festival. The film is loosely inspired by Pawlikowski’s parents’ lives. It was selected as the Polish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Starring: Joanna Kulig, Tomasz Kot, Borys Szyc

 The Interpreter (Slovak)

 The Interpreter is a 2018 Slovak drama film directed by Martin Šulík. The film is about an 80-year-old Ali Ungar who comes across a book by a former SS officer describing his wartime activities in Slovakia. He realises his parents were executed by him. He sets out to take revenge but finds instead his 70-year-old son, Georg, a retired teacher. Georg, who had avoided his father all his life, decides to find out more about him and offers Ali to be his interpreter. The two old men, in everything opposite, embark on a bittersweet journey to meet surviving witnesses of the wartime tragedy. They discover a country eager to forget its past. They realise their memories are fragments mixed with their imagination and interpretation. They connect in silence and manage to discover their own identity.

 The film was selected as the Slovak entry for the Best Foreign Language

 Border (Swedish)

 Border  is a 2018 Swedish fantasy film directed by Ali Abbasi with a screenplay by Abbasi, Isabella Eklöf and John Ajvide Lindqvist based on the short story of the same name by Ajvide Lindqvist from his anthology Let the Old Dreams Die. It is about acustoms officer who can smell fear develops an unusual attraction to a strange traveler while aiding a police investigation which will call into question her entire existence.

 The film won the Un Certain Regard award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and was selected as the Swedish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

 Beauty and the Dogs (Arabic)

 Beauty and the Dogs is a 2017 French-Tunisian drama film directed by Kaouther Ben Hania. The film is about Mariam, a young Tunisian woman, who meets the mysterious Youssef during a student party and leaves with him. A long night will begin, during which she’ll have to fight for her rights and her dignity. But how can Justice be made when it lies on the side of the

tormentors?

 The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. It was selected as the Tunisian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

 The Wild Pear Tree (Turkish)

 The Wild Pear Tree is a 2018 Turkish drama film directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. He film is about an aspiring writer who returns to his native village, where his father’s debts catch up to him.

 The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. It was also selected as the Turkish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards.

Starring: Dogu Demirkol, Murat Cemcir, Bennu Yildirimlar

 Donbass (Russian / Ukranian)

 Donbass is a 2018 internationally co-produced drama film directed by Sergei Loznitsa. The film’s thirteen segments explore the mid-2010s conflict between Ukraine and the Russian-supported Donetsk People’s Republic.

 The film was selected as the opening film in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, Loznitsa won the Un Certain Regard Award for Best Director. It was selected as the Ukrainian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. It was filmed in Kryvy Rih, 300 km of Donetsk.

Get straight into the 1970s drug trade in Columbia with the award winning Birds of Passage or dive into the austere times of the 1950s Cold War in Poland where a love story is brewing. There’s plenty more to watch.

Celebrate a Legendary Filmmaker

Commemorate the legacy of legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman this IFFI 2018. The Wild at Heart Master in His Craft: Retrospective section of Ingmar Bergman takes you on his journey through his lens and inspiration. IFFI 2018 will be showcasing 7 of the best films from his filmography. These films include Summer With Monika, Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal, Persona, Autumn Sonata, Fanny and Alexander, and Saraband. In addition to these 7 films, a documentary on Bergman titled ‘Bergman Island’, directed by Marie Nyrerod which presents the master behind the camera has also been included in this section.

Get Sporty on Screen

Sports fans will definitely love IFFI 2018. As an extension of the Khelo India Campaign, select biopics will be part of the open air screenings. Films like Gold, Mary Kom, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, 1983, MSD: The untold story and Soorma are part of the selection.

What’s more, your favourite stars will be there to present their films. GOA, 17th NOVEMBER 2018: The 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will come to a close with the World Premiere of Sealed Lips. It is important to note that the opening film of the festival ‘The Aspern Papers’ will also be having its World Premiere at IFFI 2018, in the presence of its’ critically and commercially acclaimed cast and crew.

The key cast and crew of the Sealed Lips will be present for the screening at the festival. This includes Bernd Böhlich (Director), Thomas Plenert (Director of Photography) and the cast of the film that includes actresses Barbara Schnitzler and Swetlana Schönfeld.

Speaking about the film, the Directorate of Film Festivals said, “Over the years, German films have carved a niche for themselves in world cinema, courtesy some stellar work produced by German filmmakers. We are ecstatic to have one such film from Germany as the Closing Film of IFFI 2018. And to have its World Premiere here, is an icing on the cake. We look forward to having the Director and the cast of the film with us for the premiere.” The statement further said, “At IFFI, we have always kept in mind the need for a healthy exchange of the cinema culture between countries. With the World Premiere of ‘Sealed Lips’ at IFFI, we are giving the audiences here a great opportunity to the audience to witness a World Premiere.”

Besides Schnitzler and Schönfeld, the film also stars Alexandra Maria Lara, Carlota von Falkenhayn, Robert Stadlober and Karoline Eichhorn. The 100-minute long film has been produced by Eva-Marie Martens, Alexander Martens.

Synopsis of Sealed Lips:

Antonia Berger, a young German and enthusiastic Communist, goes to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. Whilst there, she is accused of spying and sent to Vorkuta’s labor camp. After being released from the gulag in 1952, she manages to return home to the new socialist East German state with her daughter Lydia. Antonia is forced by her party comrades to keep her terrible experiences secret for the common good. Antonia has to make a choice – between truth and the present.

About the Director:

Bernd Böhlich was born on 25th April, 1957. He is a German film director who’s directed more than thirty films since 1983. Bernd Böhlich began his film career as an assistant Director at the GDR television and then began a directing degree at the Film University Potsdam-Babelsberg , which he completed in 1982 with his diploma film Front leave . He then worked as a Director and screenwriter for the GDR television.

The 49th International Film Festival of India begins on Tuesday, 20 November 2018 and ends on Wednesday, 28 November, 2018, in Panaji, Goa.

TAG ‘YOUNG ACHIEVERS AWARDS’ GOES TO ANTONET, MILAGRES

Panaji, November 17, 2018 …. The “Young Achievers Awards – 2018” organised by The Tiatr Academy Goa (TAG) were presented to Antonet De Sousa and Milagres Esvin Carneiro at a function held in Panaji, recently. The awards were given on the occasion marking the Birth Anniversary Celebration of Late Regina Fernandes, the First Lady of Tiatr Stage.

The MLA of St. Cruz Constituency, Shri Antonio Fernandes was the Chief Guest. While speaking on the occasion, Shri Fernandes said the Young Achiever Awards are a boost to the youngsters. Shri Fernandes added that although tiatrs are sometimes critical of politicians, he finds it the best medium to relax when stressed.

Present on the occasion were Tiatr personality, Rosy Alvares, President of TAG, Shri Gurudas P. Pilarnekar and Member Secretary of TAG, Shri Cezar D’ Mello, former President of TAG, Tomazinho Cardozo, among others.

President of TAG, Shri Gurudas P. Pilarnekar while speaking on the occasion said they would try to increase the number of awards in the young achiever category. He hoped that with these awards more youngsters get inspired to enter the world of tiatrs.
Booklet on the young achievers was released on the occasion. Shri Joy Fernandes compered the function.

GOVERNOR LAUNCHES GOA TRAFFIC SENTINEL MOBILE APP

Panaji: November 17,2018 …. The Governor of Goa Dr.( Smt.) Mridula Sinha  launched ‘Goa Traffic Sentinel Mobile App’ which is developed by Goa Police, at a function organized by Goa Police at Police Headquarter in the city recently.

With the objective to enable and encourage citizens to participate and assist traffic Police in law enforcement, Goa Police introduced innovative scheme called ‘Traffic Sentinel Scheme’ on November 10,2017 under overall umbrella of Community Policing. Considering huge  response from the public, the traffic Sentinel Scheme which is presently being manually operated has been automated by developing a Mobile Application on Android platform for reporting of violations by the Traffic Sentinels and Web application for management of Scheme which has been launched yesterday. . .

The Governor Speaking on the occasion said that it is agreeable that the Government have to look after the welfare of the people, but to maintain law and order discipline, peace and harmony, road safety is not possible without the cooperation and participation of the people. Therefore she said  it will be unfair to blame the Government for each and everything. The launching of Goa Traffic Sentinel App by the Government shows its commitment towards the safety of the people.

The Governor further speaking called upon the youth to participate in this endeavour of the Government which has noble intention to ensure road safety and prevent fatal accidents. She said Traffic Sentinel Scheme will enlighten people about their responsibility towards road safety which may lead to save precious lives in future. She appreciated participants of the scheme and congratulated the bumper draw winners.

The Chief Secretary Shri Dharmendra Sharma ( IAS ) while addressing the gathering said that the hallmark of educated society is voluntary compliance.  Launching of Goa Traffic Sentinel App is a initiative taken up by the Government is in the interest of the public. The intention behind is to ensure safe road traffic and avoid fatal accidents which causes loss of lives. He said due to this App reporting of traffic offences will become easy. Compliance level will go high. This is a very innovative and well run scheme will help in making the public of Goa well aware about traffic rules. He appreciated the participants of the scheme and congratulated the winners of the bumper draw.   

The Director General of Police, Dr. Muktesh Chander (IPS) in his welcome address informed that the main objective of the Traffic Sentinel Scheme is to increase the compliance of traffic laws and to reduce motor vehicle accidents. He said Goa Police calls upon all the citizens to download the Goa Traffic Sentinel App from the Google Play Store to participate in the scheme.

Dr. Chander further says that after the introduction of the scheme, the overall compliance to traffic laws has increase in Goa and has contributed towards reduction of fatal accidents and death by more than 22% as compared last year he informed. He appreciated the participants in this endeavour and also congratulated the winners of bumper prize.   

The Draw of bumper prize has also held at the hands of the Governor The winner of the first prize  is Rohidas Devanabd Naik who won Maruti Alto K 100 car, the second winner of the bumper orize  is Snehal Kadam who won Achiever motorbike  .  These prizes were sponsored by Ms Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and Hero Moto Corp. Ltd respectively.

NATIONAL PRESS DAY CELEBRATED

 Panaji, November 17, 2018 …  “National Press Day symbolizes free, fair and responsible press. Free press is a cornerstone of democracy,” said Secretary, Information and Publicity, Shri Sudhir Mahajan, IAS, at the National Press Day function held in Panaji, yesterday.

The function was organized by the Department of Information and Publicity in collaboration with the Goa Editors’ Guild, the Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ), Photo Journalists Association of Goa, Electronic Media Journalists Association, Sports Journalists Association, and South Goa Journalists Association.

Shri. Mahajan added, “The press helps to bring information on beneficial legislation of the Government to the people and if there are glitches in them, then exposes them and enables the Government to take corrective measures.”

Earlier, the message of the Chief Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar to journalists was read out by Smt. Janhhavi Savaikar on the occasion.

The Director, Department of Information and Publicity, Shri Gurudas Pilarnekar in his welcome address said that freedom of speech is imbibed in the Constitution in India.  Shri Pilarnekar said that despite difficulties the journalists face, I congratulate them for working with dedication to gain the trust of the people.

The theme of National Press Day for this year is “Journalistic Ethics and Challenges in Digital Era”. Shri. Dinkar Raikar, Group Editor of Lokmat, Mumbai delivered the key note address on the theme. In his address, he said that in democracy, press has to be the strongest opposition on behalf of the common people. “Journalism is evolving and is getting revolutionized,” he added. Shri. Raikar said technology makes things easier but it comes with a price. He said that all want to break news fast and in trying to do so gets the news wrong often.

Shri. Raikar spoke of how fake news has emerged. There are challenges but  there are initiatives being headed by individuals who are trying to make a difference and present accurate and true news, he said. Shri. Raikar concluded on a positive note that journalism of courage, conviction and truth will always prevail.

President of GUJ, Shri Kishore Naik Gaonkar introduced the senior journalists- Shri Jovito Lopes, Shri Somnath Raikar and  Smt. Nayana Adarkar- who were felicitated on the occasion for their substantial contribution in the field of Journalism. While speaking on the occasion, Shri Jovito Lopes said that journalists have to be research minded when delivering news. He said that the print media has to prepare itself for the digital revolution.

The Goa State Journalists Awards were also given to the awardees on the occasion. The Best Editor Award on ‘National Integration and Communal Harmony’ was awarded to Shri Shashwat Gupta, Editor from Gomantak Times for his Editorial “Indo – Pak peace Zinda hai”. The other awardees included Shri Devendra Ganesh Gaonkar from Herald for ‘Rural Reporting’, Ms. Nibedita Sen from Gomantak Times for ‘Reporting in Public Health and Hygiene’, Shri Vishwanath Nene from Prudent Media for ‘Reporting with special reference to Women and Children/ Social issue’, Shri Sachin Korde from Lokmat for ‘Sport Reporting’,  Shri Vitthal Gaude (Parwadkar) from Goa Doot for ‘Reporting on Art and Culture’. Shri Hemant Parab from The Navhind Times was awarded ‘Photo Journalism-Best Photograph of the year’.

 Present on the occasion was former Director of Department of Information and Publicity, Shri. T.S.Sawant. Information Officer. Shri. John Aguiar proposed the vote of thanks. Shri. Shyam Gaonkar compered the function.

STATE LEVEL CRIB COMPETITION DURING CHRISTMAS

Panaji: November 16, 2018 … The State level Crib Competition has organized by Directorate of Art and Culture from December 26 to 31, 2018 in Goa.

The competition will be held in two categories, Institutions/Group Cribs made by institutions, clubs, parishes or by a group of people and Individuals/Household Cribs made at a house or beside the house by an individual or within a family.

The winners of the competition will be awarded cash prizes along with the certificate. The prizes for Institution/Group Category are as follows: 1st Prize- Rs. 25,000/-, 2nd Prize- Rs.20,000/-, 3rd Prize- Rs. 15,000/- and Five Consolation Prizes of Rs. 7,000/- each. For Individuals/Household Category, the prizes are as follows: 1st Prize- Rs. 15,000/-, 2nd Prize- Rs.10,000/-, 3rd Prize- Rs. 7,500/- and Five Consolation Prizes of Rs. 5000/- each.

EDUCATION CAN MAKE A PERSON POWERFUL: SARDESAI

Margao:  November 16, 2018 ..“Knowledge is power”. Irrespective of caste and creed only education can make a person powerful. Central Government and State Government are for alleviating the hardships of the common man. The State Government continuously strives to provide better education facilities to common man said by Town and Country Planning Minister, Shri Vijay Sardesai.

Shri Sardesai was speaking on the occasion of Foundation Stone laying ceremony for Demolition and reconstruction of Margao Government Industrial Training Institute and Multipurpose Higher Secondary School at Borda Margao today.

 Speaking further Shri Sardesai informed that the project with a built area of 7948 sq. mts will have 5 floors and provision for e-classroom facilities will be completed within 12 months instead of 18 months as scheduled. The cost of the project is approximately Rs.25.00 crores.

The TCP Minister also thanked the Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar for his unconditional support for whole lot of infrastructural development projects which are underway throughout the State. He urged the gathering to pray for better and speedy recovery of our Chief Minister.

Shri Sardesai reiterated his commitment to make every effort to have vertical growth of Fatorda constituency and assured to construct a better cricket ground compared to present ground for the public.

Shri Deepak Pauskar, Chairman, GSIDC praising Shri Vijay Sardesai for his dedicated efforts to make this day successful said that he is very happy to start this project which was pending for quite a long time and assured to complete the project within the stipulated 12 months.

 Shri Pauskar highlighted the recently launched scheme “Chief Minister Rojgar Yogna’ under which civil engineers who have been a resident of the State for 15 years will be registered with GSIDC and provide them contracts for  renovation of primary school across the State by providing loan facility for upto Rs.25 lakhs.
