GUJ CONDOLES DEATH OF SENIOR JOURNALIST MINOO FERNANDES

Panaji ::: The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) condoles the passing away of senior sports journalist Inacio Menino Fernandes, who breathed his last after a brief illness on Sunday.
Inacio, lovingly known as Minoo, was 68 and is survived by wife and two sons.
Minoo was a  journalist for 30 years. He started his career as a teacher and taught History and English at St. Anthony’s school, Majorda untill retirement.
Minoo worked as a correspondent for Herald and The Navhind Times for nearly 30 years. While in Herald, he reported crime and sports, while in The Navhind Times, his primary focus area was sports reporting.
St Anthony’s Club, Colva had felicitated Minoo for his selfless service in the field of journalism.
The Goa Union of Journalists conveys it’s deepest sympathies to his family.

GOA BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST STATE TO HAVE RESOURCE EFFICIENCY STRATEGY

Panaji, March 1st,2020 …. Ambassador of the European Union to India Shri. Ugo Astuto, along with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant launched the strategy for ‘Fostering Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy in Goa’, making Goa a pioneering state to prepare such strategy. The strategy presents an overall state-level action plan to main stream resource efficiency and circular economy and foster sustainable management of resources in the state.

 The function was organized by Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation (DPSE) in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and with support from European Union’s Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI) at Panaji recently.

 Director, Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation (DPSE), Shri Dr. Y Durga Prasad and Counselor, Environment, Energy & Climate Change, European Union Delegation to India, Ms. Henriette Faergemann were present on the occasion.

 Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant expressed his gratitude to Niti Aayog for encouraging the State of Goa to formulate the State strategy on Resource Efficiency (RE) and Circular Economy (CE) and congratulated the Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation, Government of Goa for steering the development of this Strategy.

Talking about the collaboration, the EU Ambassador said “We are extremely delighted to have been supporting the state of Goa in preparation of the Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Strategy.

 The strategy has been prepared by Directorate of Planning, Statistics and Evaluation (DPSE), Government of Goa, and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) was assigned to help them develop this Strategy with support from the EU-Resource Efficiency Initiative (EU-REI). The Strategy presents a resource efficiency roadmap for tourism and construction along with addressing the issue of marine litter.

 The strategy recognises the emergent need to use resources judiciously across lifecycle in order to sustain Goa’s long-term development and societal wellbeing.

Stakeholder groups from Goa who participated in the focused group discussions for the strategy paper were Tourism, Construction, Civil Society, Waste, Marine and Business and other Sectors.

 Smt. Ashwini compered the function and Shri Furtado Deputy Director, Directorate of Planning and Statistics proposed the vote of thanks.

 

TRAINING  HELD ON BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR OFFICERS INVOLVED IN ROAD SAFETY

Panaji, February  29, 2020 ::: Directorate of Transport, Government of Goa in association with Manipal Hospitals Goa has conducted Basic Life Support Training for the officers involved in Road Safety Program of Government of Goa. The training program was inaugurated by Director of Transport  Department,  Shri Rajan Satardekar.  Head of Department, Oncology Department and a Senior Surgeon at Manipal Hospital,  Dr. Shekhar Salkar were present on the occasion.

The session was  attended by Dy. Director (S), Shri Ivo Rodrigues   and Asstt. Directors and Motor Vehicle Inspectors of Directorate of Transport and Representatives of State Road Safety Council, namely Department of Environment, Panaji  Traffic Police Cell, KTCL and North Goa Collectorate.

The  session was taken by Head of Department, Emergency and Trauma at KMC, Hospital Mangalore and Manipal Hospitals Goa, Dr. Jeedhu Radhakrishnan. PRO of  Manipal Hospital, Shri Jones Samuel  Coordinated the training program.

While imparting  training the  trainer emphasized that, lives can be saved by timely first aid during Golden Hour which is a first hour after accident, during which the accident victim have higher chances of survival. Officers of Transport  Department are involved in duty on highways and roads and can act as a first responded, until medical help arrives.

Trainer demonstrated how’ to move victim to safety  position and carryout first aid. It takes less than 4 minutes for a blocked airway  to cause death. Trainer demonstrated about how to know that  victim is able to breath and clearing airway, restore breathing stop bleeding until help arrives.

SCIENCE EXHIBITION ‘KALPAK’ INAUGURATED IN PANAJI

February 28, 2020  ….‘Kalpak’, an innovative exhibition showcasing science projects, projects in Engineering, Arts and Social Sciences by college students and Goan inventors was inaugurated today at the Old Secretariat Building in the city.  Director of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa Prof Dr. Gopal Mugeraya inaugurated the three-day exhibition organized by Directorate of Higher Education in the presence of Director, Directorate of Higher Education Shri. Prasad Lolayenkar and key note speakers Prof. V. Saxena and Dr. Vithal Tilvi. The exhibition was open for the public view todayfree of cost from 10.00 a.m. to 5.p.m.

While speaking on the occasion, Earlier Prof Mugeraya said that education should be a process to bring out the best knowledge from within us. Blaming the online sources of information, Shri. Mugeraya opined that today’s students are becoming confused individuals. “There is too much available in the form of education and information, hence, one must learn to select what is best and suitable. Our education system today does not prepare us to take risks. It was a dream of our late Chief Minister Shri. Manohar Parrikar to make this state an Education Hub hence, he brought some of the best Educational Institutes in the state. Goan students should work hard to get into them and not to go outside for Education,” he urged.

          Director, Higher Education Shri. Prasad Lolayekar in his welcome address informed that the prime goal of organizing ‘Kalpak’ is to provide a unique a platform for students to showcase their talents, and interact with fellow innovators, eventually building future research collaborators. “It aims to bring academicians, innovators and public on a single platform,” Shri. Lolayenkar said. Smt. Siddhi Upadhye compered and also proposed the vote of thanks.

The the formal function was followed by Public talk by Prof. V. Saxena, Ex Vice-Chancellor of Jiwaji University, Gwalior on ‘Mathematics in the World of Biological Sciences’. On February 27th, Dr. Debasis Patnaik from BITS-Goa will address the audience on ‘Education and Socio economic reforms in Goa’ and on February 28, Dr. Vithal Tilvi from Directorate of Higher Education will address on ‘Wonders of the Universe’ at 11.00 a.m.

SEMINAR ON RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN REGULATORY LANDSCAPE OF INDIA AND REGULATED MARKETS HELD

Panaji: February 26, 2020 :::: Smt. Nila Mohanan, IAS, Secretary for Health inaugurated a seminar on Recent Advancements in Regulatory Landscape of India and Regulated Markets organized by Pharmexcil in collaboration with Food and Drugs Administration and CDSCO in city recently.

Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India (Pharmexcil) is a body setup by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India for export promotion of Pharmaceuticals & allied products. Pharmexcil acts as facilitator by representing industry concerns with Government  agencies and advises the Government on export policy measures. The objective could be achieved when the industry is technically and intellectually sound with the global regulatory practices.

After formal inauguration, addressing the gathering Smt. Nila Mohanan said, having such events in the state, helps to share the knowledge which embraces with the latest developments in regulated markets. She further added such interactions create opportunity to update the skills, which helps to stay connected in competitive field of pharmaceutical industries.

Stressing on the need to bridge the gap between academia and the industries the Health Secretary said, the huge gap exists between what  industry is doing  and what is the requirement of industries in terms of skills, which needs to be addressed.

Speaking further the Secretary said, pharmaceuticals are always a silent champion in the industrial sector. One cannot ignore the contribution made by pharmaceutical sector in field of industrial growth. Pharmaceutical is one sector in the Indian growth story that has not let down the industrial sector, she added.

Speaking on the occasion Smt. Jyothi Sardessai, Director Food and Drugs Administration said, the challenges are being faced all over the country which needs to be tackled on a continuous basis and that is where initiatives in organizing such events are of great help. She said, interactions with regulators and industry experts, sharing of information and experience and discussing ways and means for resolution of issues are need of the hour, she added.
Dr. Rubina Bose, DDC(I), West Zone, Mumbai also spoke on the occasion.

Footballers in the GFA Goa Professional League match played at Nagoa ground, on Saturday.
Saeesh Madan (35’), Godfrey Mascarenhas (71’) and Stephen Satarkar (90+ 1) were the goal scorers for the Green Brigades.
With the teams starting the match on a cautious note, the initial stages saw both sides restrict to midfield duel. Salgaocar FC were given a chance to take the lead at the half hour mark when Panjim Footballers player handled the ball in the box and the referee awarded straight to the spot. Salgaocar FC’s Saeesh stepped up and coolly converted the
spot kick. They led 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, Salgaocar FC doubled the account when Godfrey Mascarenhas, on seeing the keeper out of position, took a long shot from  the midfield straight in the goal, to make it 2-0.
Salgaocar FC’s Flagan Rodrigues and Stephen Joshant, who came in place of injured Daniel Gomes gave a good account of themselves in the defence.
Salgaocar FC made it 3-0 in the second half injury time when Selwyn Miranda played a through pass to the Stephen Satarkar who made no mistake to hit the ball into the back of the net, 3-0.
