Captain of Ports issues directives to all barge owners, water sports boats owners, canoe owners and all other boat owners to undertake the preventative measures during the monsoon to prevent the occurrence of Vector Borne Diseases like Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya due the increase in mosquito breeding habitats subsequent to the rain water collection.

It may be informed that the incidence of Vector Borne Diseases like Malaria, Dengue and Chikungunya usually is on the increase during the monsoons. As such, to prevent the occurrence of these diseases during the monsoon, all barge owners, watersports boats owners, canoe owners and all other boat owners are directed to undertake preventative measures during the monsoon at the earliest.

The circular states that the owners/masters of the barges should ensure that no rainwater is accumulated in the cargo hold of the barges. The water so collected should be drained out regularly from the barges. The owners/masters of the barges and other inland vessels should ensure that there is no stagnation of water in tyres used as fenders; the simplest tray could be drilling a hole at the bottom of the tyres so that the water from the tyres is drained out. The owners of the other small vessels/crafts/ canoes/water sports boats should properly cover their vessels with tarpaulin during monsoon and/ or they should keep their vessels/boats upside down during monsoon season/when not in use, so that no rainwater is accumulated in the vessel. Water accumulated in the vessel should be removed /drained out regularly. The owners/master/ of barges and other vessels have to ensure that the labourers engaged to work on the trawlers/vessels or at the jetties need to be screened for Malaria and obtain health cards for them from the Directorate of Health Services.

Therefore, all Owners/Masters of the barges, passengers launches, boats, tindels of fishing trawlers, and operators of the mechanized and nonĀ  mechanized crafts, including the tourist boats, cruise boats, etc. art directed to ensure the compliance of the above directives. Violation, if any, will be viewed seriously
