Goa opened their medal account in weightlifting with Shubham Verma clinch the silver medal in the men’s 102 kg weight category at the 37th National Games at the Campal Games village on Saturday.
Verma lifted a total of 326 kg to finish second behind Kojum Taba of Services Sports Control Board. Assam’s Md. Jameir Hussain bagged the bronze with a total lift of 325.
The Goa lifter began his snatch events with a lift of 138 kg and successfully attempted 143 kg in the second. However, he failed at 146 kg and was fourth at the end before the start of clean and jerk.
This is where he started his charge by lifting 183 kg in his second attempt to jump to second position. He then jumped to 188 kg to try and win the gold medal but failed.
“I am happy that I could help Goa win its first medal in weightlifting. I thought I could win the gold medal but I hurried a bit during my lift and got unbalanced and lost my chance,” he said after bagging the medal.
The hosts also won two bronze medals in Modern Pentathlon when their Biathle team finished third behind Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Yug Salvi (15.13.75), Shivnath Majik (16.03.15) and Narayan Giri (16.43.73) were the members of that team.
Pratiksha Velip and Yug Dalvi then added second bronze in Biathle Mixed Relay with a timing of 14.31.65. Maharashtra clinched the gold while Madhya Pradesh took home the silver medal.
Goa had also won two more bronze medals in Pencak Silat late Friday night through Ajay Korbotkar (Tanding under-45 kg men) and Parmesh Chauhan (Tanding female 45-50 kg) category.
The hosts had also won two bronze medals last night in Modern Pentathlon. Suraj Velip and Kushi Borkar claimed third place in Triathle mixed relay with Suraj also teaming up with Darshan Velip to bag the bronze medal in Triathle men category
With these medals, Goa now have one gold, four silver and 11 bronze for a total of 16 medals.
