Panaji: Aug.25,2015 …. Minister for Transport Shri Sudin Dhavalikar has said that the every individual should realize that road safety as his own concern and adhered to traffic safety rules and discipline driving so as to minimize road accidents which are occurring in the state. The death toll for the current year is 280 out of these 180 succumb to head injury which he is a matter of concern.
Shri Dhavalikar was speaking as the Chief Guest for the inaugural function of 5thState Road Safety Week-2015 held at Ravindra Bhavan Margao today. The function was organized by the Directorate of Transport. The theme for the celebration was “Safety is Key, It is upto you and me”
Shri Dhavalikar speaking further said that the objective of road traffic safety cannot be achieved without the support and cooperation of the people. Public has to respond to the various measures initiated by the Government undertaken to avoid loss of lives due to fatal accidents. Government has constituted a cell to make road safety audit, road engineering, road safety patrolling and also has plans to make provision of special lanes for two wheelers on highways.
MLA and Chairman of Goa Kala Academy Shri Vishnu Wagh who was the guest of honor while addressing the gathering said that we need to change our mind set about road safety. We have also to ponder over that road safety is our concern which can be maintained by us. If we follow traffic rules, coupled with discipline driving are the best ways to avoid road accident and save our precious lives.
Shri Roland Martins Conveyor Goa Can while speaking at the function said that occasions like Road Safety Week celebrations provideds us an opportunity to educate, sensitize masses about the vital importance of road safety and emphasize on various other aspects of road traffic safety. He suggested the Government to initiate road safety patrolling and involvemore and more citizens for the cause of road safety.
Shri Arthur D,Silva Chairman MMC while addressing at the function stressed on the traffic safety rules so that we can prevent ourselves from accidents. If precautions are properly taken the incidents of accidents can be curbed.
The Director of Transport Shri Arun Desai in his welcome address informed that the Government will enforce the rule of wearing helmet from the first of September where in the two wheeler riders found not using the helmet would be fined as usual and would be detained for two hours counseling. Therefore carrying of helmet would not be tolerated here after. He said, although there is awareness of traffic safety among the Goans but due to the negligence, and rash driving leads to fatal accidents.
Shri Dhavalikar on the occasion released short film “Helmet” highlighting the importance of helmet, produced by the Transport Department. Thereafter he also released posters brought out by Goa Can and Rotary club, depicting message of road safety.
