28th ANNUAL CONVOCATION HELD

Panaji, February  6, 2016 …. The Governor of Goa and Chancellor of Goa University Dr. Smt Mridula Sinha has appealed to youths to keep themselves away from consumption of drugs which has ruined the lives of many youths.

 The Governor was speaking at the 28th Annual Convocation ceremony of Goa University held at Taleigao recently.

 the Convocation which was held at Dr.Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium was attended by Prof. Suhas P. Sukhatme, Director  & Prof. Emeritus, IIT, Bombay, Vice Chancellor, Goa University, Dr. Satish R. Shetye and Registrar of Goa University Prof. Vijendra Kamat.

 The convocation  was conferred to Bachelor’s degrees on 8,199 graduates, Master’s degree on 1, 415 postgraduates, and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy on 38 doctorates. In addition,  120 recipients of postgraduate diplomas and 3 of M. Phil.degree. Altogether  9,737 become recognized today as graduates, post-graduates, postgraduate diploma holders and doctorates of Goa University.  Amongst those who were honoured, are recipients of awards that include 69 Gold Medals, 60 Prizes and 27 Certificates of Merit that have been awarded in recognition of their excellence.

 Speaking further the Governor said  that  the nation is passing through a crucial stage wherein several youths have been addicted to drugs and even in Goa some youth are victims of this drug menace. She hoped that this menace is extinguished from society .  She said it is our duty to help others too to say no to drugs.

 Speaking further, the Governor said it was a proud moment for her and the state of Goa to see that scholarships, medals and prizes have been awarded to

degree/diploma holders.  She said  this feat achieved by them will help them to pursue their goals in the country as well as abroad.

 The Governor said the world today is full of challenges and opportunities.  The youth of today should equip themselves to face the challenges and snatch the opportunities available for their betterment and the country at large.

 The Governor welcomed Prof. Suhas P Sukhatme and said his words of wisdom are inspiration for all of us.

 Prof. Suhas P. Sukhatame, Director and Prof. Emeritius, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in his key note address said that it was note worthy  to see that at under graduate level, there is a mix of colleges imparting general education in order service and commerce and colleges impairing professional education in engineering, medicine, nursing, architecture etc and expressed happiness that Goa University received ‘A’ grade from NAAC.

 Prof. Sukhatame said the key to quality education lies in the quality of faculty who make an institution what it is. If excellent faculty members are theres students will follow, he said.

 Prof. Sukhatame further stated that Faculty is the key element in elevating the quality of the teaching and research output of a University. He said a faculty member should show commitment to the cause she/he is serving and deep commitment is a quality to look in a faculty member apart from outstanding academic attainments.

 Prof. Sukhatame  stated that the most important thing for a person starting his career is to  set a goal and pursue that goal. For this, he said there is need for ability to work hard and effectively, to recognize that one’s education is a continuing process which should never stop, and also to communicate well at all levels .

 Dr. Satish Shetye, Vice Chancellor, in his address said that the annual convocation is a time to share with the State of Goa our perceptions of where we stand, our aspirations, hopes and our concerns about fulfilling the responsibility the state has given us as the only University created by it to ensure that its youth have access to higher education.

 Dr. Shetye stated that enrollment in 30 general educational affiliated colleges of Goa Univeristy has increased sharply from 6,700 last year to 8,800 this year.  The size of the middle class in the state is rising so is the number of students

wanting to get university education  he said and ensured that they will put in place systems to meet aspirations of the students, he said.

 Members of University bodies; Deans of Faculties; Principals, Heads of Departments, Members of Faculties; Principals, Heads of Departments, Members of Faculties from the Main Campus and from the Colleges affiliated to the University; distinguished guests, Members of the Staff of the University, students, recipients of degrees, winners of medals, prizes and certificates of merit and parents were present  at the convocation ceremony.
