RICH TRIBUTES PAID TO COPS ON POLICE COMMEMORATION DAY

October 21, 2014 …. Police Commemoration Day 2014, was observed in Goa today along with other parts of the country. Tributes were paid to those who laid down their lives, while performing their duties. Every year, October 21 is observed as police commemoration day in memory of CRPF personnel, who were killed by the Chinese in 1959.

The arms were reversed by the Police at the Martyrs Memorial, to pay homage to the departed souls.

Every year on October 21, rich tributes are paid to the policemen who sacrifice their lives while discharging their duties. The day is observed as the National Police Commemoration Day, in their remembrance. The history behind the observance of this day on October 21 is said to be that in 1959, on the same day, twenty Indian soldiers were attacked by the Chinese troops in Ladakh, during which ten were killed and seven were imprisoned and others managed to escape. The dead bodies of the martyred policemen were handed over to India by the Chinese troops on November 28, 1959 and then, their cremation was held with full Police honours at the Hot springs in Ladakh.

The names of 662 Police Martyrs and paramilitary forces who have lost their lives in service of the country during 1.9.2013 to 31.8.2014 were  read out by the DGP  to acknowledge with pride the supreme sacrifices made by them.

After the commemoration parade, DGP and other Police Officers laid wreathes at the martyrs memorial  in commemoration of the Police personnel who have lost their lives while on duty and in combating enemy.

Others who were present were Deputy Inspector General of Police, Shri V. Ranganathan, S.Ps, Dy. S.Ps , Police  Medical Officer, retired police officers, Representatives of Home Guards and Civil Defence organisation and others.
