The State observed Goa Revolution Day today June 18 at Lohia Maidan Margao to recall the sacrifices of freedom fighters and Martyrs of Goa’s liberation struggle. On the occasion Central Minister of State for Skill Development and Electronics Shri. Rajeev Chandrashekhar along with the Chief Minister paid tributes to martyrs to mark the 77th Goa Revolution Day.
June 18 marks the anniversary of the historic protest that took place in 1946 led by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, a freedom fighter who called for a non-violent demonstration against the Portuguese regime. While speaking on the occasion Minister of State for Skill Development Shri Rajeev Chandrashekhar said that 18 June has a special meaning to the people of Goa. “On this Day the suppressed patriotic feelings burst into a mass revolution which led to Goa’s Liberation from the British colonial regime. Let us dedicate and rededicate ourselves to Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas to build modern developed Goa and Viksit Bharat”.
Chief Minister of Goa Dr. Pramod Sawant speaking on the occasion said that “Today is an historic day as we celebrate 77th Goa Revolution Day. Atmanirbhar Bharat and SwayamPurna Goa 2.0 skilling, reskilling and upskilling are initiatives taken by our Government. Goa is set to host the National Games this year. On this Day I take the opportunity to declare that our government has made innovations in terms of Technology, Development, Research, StartUps, Coding, Robotics and various other sectors which is a huge achievement”.
PWD Minister Shri Nilesh Cabral, Transport Minister Shri. Mauvin Godinho, Margao MLA Shri Digambar Kamat, Navelim MLA Shri Ulhas Tuvenkar, MP Shri Vinay Tendulkar and freedom fighters were present on the occasion.
On this historic day Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Grandson Shri Ramesh Chandra Lohia was felicitated who was present along with his family members. The unsung heroes who took part during Goa’s freedom struggle were also felicitated. A documentary on Dr. Lohia was played to the audience which culminated towards Goa’s freedom. A book written by Dr. Lohia in the year 1939 was also launched as the second edition here today. Goa Revolution Day commemorates one of the State’s most pivotal moments in history. This call inspired many Goans which ultimately resulted in attaining Liberation by Goa on December 19, 1961.
