The youths are turning their attention towards mussel farming, signaling a positive shift in the local aquaculture industry said, Shri Nilkanth Halarnkar, Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Factories & Boilers. He emphasized the importance of promoting mussel farming and other aqua farming activities among the region’s fishermen. The Minister made these remarks at an enlightening awareness program on Mussel Farming, organized by the Directorate of Fisheries at Akhada, St. Estevam Tiswadi. By encouraging the younger generation to participate in mussel farming, the government aims to ensure the preservation of traditional occupations while also providing opportunities for economic growth. Shri Nilkanth Halarnkar urged fishermen to embrace mussel farming and aqua farming, highlighting the various schemes and benefits offered by the government to support these initiatives.

The Mussel Farming project, initiated as a pilot project in St. Estevam, is a matter of great pride for the community said Shri Rajesh Faldessai, the MLA of Cumbharjua Constituency and Chairman of the Goa Rehabilitation Board office. He expressed his gratitude to Fisheries Minister Shri Nilkanth Halarnkar for the extensive support provided. Government will extend its full assistance, ensuring that every possible measure is taken to support the local fishermen and the community, he informed.

During the event, Dr. Shamila Monteiro, Director of Fisheries, emphasized the importance of taking advantage of the schemes offered by the Fisheries Department. She provided detailed information about the diverse range of schemes available to individuals interested in aquaculture.

Smt Smita A. Sawant, Sarpanch of Village Panchayat St. Estevam, and Shri Estevam S. Ribeiro, Deputy Sarpanch of Village Panchyat St. Estevam also spoke at the occasion. Dattaraj Tari, a young fisherman, expressed his experience about Mussel farming culture.

Saira R. Narvekar, Panch Member of Village Panchayat St. Estevam, officials from the Fisheries Department, and numerous others attended the programme.
