03/03/2014 …. PWD minister sudhin dhavlikar on Sunday laid the foundation stones for two water treatment plants – a 71 crore rupees 27 MLD Opa water treatment plant and the 115 crore rupees 27 MLD Ganjem water treatment plant in the presence of Ponda MLA lavoo mamledar.
The entire 27 MLD of water at Opa is planned to be pumped to Panaji city, which presently gets only around 11.5 MLD. Once commissioned, the Opa plant is expected to supply 24 x 7 water supply to Panaji. The Opa project is being taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission scheme.
The existing capacity of the Opa water treatment facility is 114 MLD but with the water getting distributed to the two talukas of Tiswadi and Ponda and some villages adjoining Ponda, there is a water shortage in Panaji.
The project will be taken up in two parts; one is the construction of the 27-MLD water treatment plant and the second is the distribution network. Both contractors will be given a deadline of 365 days to complete the works. The 27 MLD water treatment plant at Ganjem will add to water supply to areas in Sanguem and Ponda talukas.
